Still Going Strong At 74

Ms Caroline Lim, 74

Caroline’s volunteering journey started with a search on the web to look for volunteering opportunities to remain active and relevant. Since then, Caroline has found her passion – helping the community!

At the age of 74, Ms Caroline Lim continues to keep herself active by volunteering in the community.

She shares that upon her retirement, her son wanted to make sure that she continued to stay active and relevant, and thus took to the internet to look for volunteering organisations that offered a variety of programmes that reached out to different beneficiaries. “When he found out about RSVP Singapore, he signed me up for their open house, and this is how I began my volunteering journey,” says Caroline.

Recounting her experience at RSVP’s Open House in August 2019, Caroline says that there were a number of ad-hoc volunteering opportunities available for volunteers to try. “So, I signed up to do warehouse packing at Foodbank and have been with RSVP’s Episodic Volunteering Programme ever since.”

Through RSVP’s Episodic Programme, which is supported by Council for Third Age (C3A), Caroline has had the opportunity to participate in many different volunteering activities that allow her to move around and maintain a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically.

Some of the activities that she has been involved with include “Fu Dai Packing with Standard Chartered Bank and Comchest” in January 2020 and Temasek Foundation’s “#BYOBClean (Bring Your Own Clean Bottle)” initiative in March 2020. In the latter, Caroline was tasked to distribute hand sanitisers to help battle Covid-19 at Kampung Ubi CC and Bishan CC.

She says of the experience, “The hours were long and tiring especially on humid days, but through the encouragement by volunteers coming together for a common cause, I was inspired to give my very best as part of the team.”

Moreover, Caroline says that volunteering has given her the chance to open her eyes and stay active. “I feel hopeful and touched to see so many like-minded individuals coming together. Volunteering makes me feel young at heart because I’m hanging out with the younger generation and it gives me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.

I am an active person and I don’t want to spend my retirement at home. I want to contribute to the community while I still can!”
