Picking up digital skills from youth ambassadors

Picking up digital skills from youth ambassadors

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated an adoption of digital solutions and those who are able to digitally bank and pay would enjoy greater ease in their daily activities due to the convenience of these digital services.

As more people turn to online shopping and making digital payments during the pandemic, the National Silver Academy (NSA) and POSB jointly organised an Intergenerational Learning Programme (ILP) Workshop on Digital Banking on 18 November 2021 to support seniors who are keen to pick up these digital skills. With a total of 21 seniors participating in this inaugural online session, the workshop was made possible through the sponsorship of POSB.

During the session, the seniors got to learn from a POSB Digital Youth Ambassador on the benefits of digital banking and picked up security tips to stay safe while banking online. The funds transfer service, PayNow, and mobile payment applications, such as POSB DigiBank and DBS PayLah!, were also covered during the three-hour session.

To facilitate intergenerational interactions between the seniors and youths, the participants were split into smaller virtual groups for easier communication. Guided by the POSB Digital Youth Ambassadors, the seniors learnt how they could use DBS PayLah! to make everyday payments for transport, F&B, entertainment, retail expenses and bills. The seniors also learnt that they can send and request money simply through PayLah! bot on Telegram.

71-year-old Mdm Betty Ng was one of the participants in this workshop. She espoused the importance of becoming digitally savvy today, and shared that: “Many of us are moving towards digital (services) today as it is a good alternative to minimise social interactions during the pandemic. It is therefore good for me to keep up with the times. We don’t have to carry much cash too, which is convenient.”

As for 67-year old Mr Tony Tan, he found the session to be insightful. He found the POSB Digital Ambassadors knowledgeable and helpful as he now understands how he can have a secured digital banking experience with good practices. The guidance he had received during the workshop has given Mr Tan newfound confidence to use e-payments in the future.
