Inspired to learn and pursue her dream

Mdm Yvonne Tay, 69

Mdm Yvonne Tay, 69, always had an interest for music and dreamt of being able to play her favourite songs on the keyboard. As a retiree and grandparent to 3 grandchildren, she was inspired to start learning the keyboard.

Through word of mouth from her friends via WhatsApp, she found out about the National Silver Academy (NSA), administered by Council for Third Age. Mdm Tay decided to enrol in the keyboard and harmonica courses offered under NSA. From the end of 2019 to 2020, she completed “Making Harmony with Harmonica I & II” and “圆梦电子琴I, II & III”, conducted by Family Central.

Making the best of the situation

During the circuit breaker period, all courses had to be taught online. However, this did not dampen Mdm Tay’s spirit to continue her learning journey in musical instruments. She kept a positive mindset and adapted well by taking up NSA online courses on Zoom. Mdm Tay credits the supportive staff and trainers from Family Central who helped her in online learning journey. Through daily practice, she has made tremendous progress in her music proficiency, and is able to improve her fine motor skills and keep her mind sharp.

“I would like to say thank you to the caring staff and passionate teachers at Family Centre for making my dream come true – I can now play my favourite songs on the keyboard,” said Mdm Tay.

“Under the good guidance of the teachers, I had a very fulfilling circuit breaker period at home. I thoroughly enjoyed the melodious songs while practicing on my harmonica and keyboard, and I’m very glad that I can pick up new skills and keep engaged with music amidst the stay-home period, which has boosted my overall well-being,” she continued.

Finding joy in daily life

One important lesson that Mdm Tay learnt during the pandemic is to find joy in daily life and simple pleasures since she spends more time indoors. Besides taking care of her grandchildren, playing music instruments gives her great satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. It has also helped to deepen the bond with her grandchildren due to a shared interest in music and being able to coach one another in need.

Speaking of her plans in the near future, Mdm Tay is keen to further her skills in keyboard by taking up the more advanced Level 4 keyboard course.

**Special thanks to Mdm Yvonne Tay who accepted our interview, we wish her all the very best in her lifelong learning journey.
