Chinese Dance Fiesta 2024: Talk & Demonstration

Synopsis

As part of Chinese Dance Fiesta, Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) is pleased to host two dance experts to share more about the refined and expressive Chinese Han-Tang Classical Dance as well as the vibrant and unique yao ethnic dance.

4 May: Chinese Han-Tang Classical Dance

Chinese Han-Tang classical dance was created in 1979 by late professor Sun Ying of the Beijing Dance Academy, China. The dance style is inspired by the music and dance of the Han and Tang dynasties as well as the ideology of traditional Chinese opera in the Ming and Qing dynasties, showcasing the unique beauty of Chinese culture.

This talk and demonstration will be conducted by Ms Liu Jia, an experienced instructor who teaches at the School of Continuing Education of the Beijing Dance Academy, China. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Chinese Classical Dance as well as a Master’s degree of Fine Art.

5 May: Yao Ethnic Folk Dance

The yao people have lived in the mountains and forests for a long time, making a living by farming and hunting. As a result, the dance of the yao people is closely related to hunting, farming and religious offerings. The movements of the yao dance reflect the hardworking, courageous and positive attitude towards life of the yao people. This talk and demonstration will feature one of the main types of yao dance, which is the long drum dance.

This talk and demonstration will be conducted by Ms Shao Ziwen, Deputy Head of Dance of Singapore Raffles Music College (Dance Faculty). She graduated with a Bachelor of Dance from Minzu University of China in 2012 and obtained her Masters in dance (Choreography) from Minzu University of China in 2015.
