Riding the Waves and Smiling the Whole Way Through

Riding the Waves and Smiling the Whole Way Through

Everyone experiences stress from time to time. However, the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic may have resulted in us feeling more anxious than usual. It is therefore, more important than ever for us to stay mentally healthy by building our mental resilience.

To strengthen seniors’ mental resilience and well-being, C3A curated its first-ever National Silver Academy (NSA) course titled C3A Mental Well-being Curriculum — Riding the Waves of Change Smiling, conducted by various course providers under the NSA.

This course was recently conducted online in Mandarin by En Community Services Society on 13 January 2022. The 14 attendees got to understand the most common mental well-being issues faced by seniors and why they occur. They also gained practical tips and identified positive attitudes and mindsets to enhance and maintain their mental well-being via experiential learning.

Through games and discussions, the attendees had the opportunity to interact in virtual breakout rooms and share their thoughts on what is important to them and how they can mitigate stress due to the life changes associated with ageing.

69-year-old Mdm Tay was one of the participants in this course. She shared that as life is more stressful now, she wanted to learn tips and techniques to relax her mind. “In the past, I got to go out more often and meet up with my friends. However, the COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted all of our routines. Taking up this course has helped me to see these hurdles positively. I feel much more optimistic now.”

For 64-year-old Mdm Chong, this course taught her to be happier by finding strength in forgiveness and tolerance. “We can be healthier if we are also happier. I learnt that we should not be unhappy or lose our temper over little things in life. With the self-care tips I gained from the course, I find myself smiling more every day, ” she said.

Both Mdm Tay and Mdm Chong encourage others to attend this course too. “This course helps us to acquire a positive outlook towards life. I believe what we took away from this course cannot be found easily via other channels,” Mdm Tay concluded.
