Elderly residents receive red packets ahead of Chinese New Year

More than 1,600 senior citizens living in Yishun received red packets ranging from S$40 to S$200 at an event at Chong Pang Community Centre.

SINGAPORE: More than 1,600 senior citizens living in Yishun received hong baos, or red packets, ahead of Chinese New Year.


MP for Nee Soon GRC K Shanmugam gave out the hong baos at an event held at Chong Pang Community Centre on Sunday (Feb 15).


Senior citizens aged 65 to 89 received S$40 and those aged 90 and above got S$120. In addition, 12 residents on public assistance received S$200.


Among the recipients were three centenarians - Mdm Ng Choon, Mdm Guan Yoke Cheng and Mdm Ong Say Chuan. They also received gift packs and watched performances put up by students and various groups.


A commemorative SG50 PAssion Card was also launched at the event. With the card, seniors will be able to attend a free one-hour class for certain courses conducted at community centres. This year, anyone aged 55 and above can sign up to receive a free PAssion Card.
