Course on Introduction to Practical Gerontology

Jointly organized by Council for Third Age (C3A) and the Gerontology Research Programme (GRP) at the National University of Singapore, the course aims to provide participants who have little or no basic knowledge of gerontology with a basic understanding of the science of ageing and elements of professional care of seniors, to be better equipped as service planners, providers and facilitators.

Course Outline:
Module 1 Understanding Ageing
provides a basic understanding of the bio-psychosocial ageing process, and its impact on mental, physical and social wellbeing.

Module 2 Issues in Ageing will discuss population ageing and its Social, Economic and Healthcare Implications.

Module 3 Caring for the Seniors - Life cycle changes will discuss the four ages of life (preparation, achievement, fulfillment, completion) and the eight stages of the family life cycle (developmental, social and psychological tasks of each stage)

Module 4 Promoting Wellness in Senior Years will introduce ‘active ageing’, its concept and operationalization, importance, and the factors associated with successful ageing.

Module 5 Handling Psychosocial And Health Problems Of Seniors will provide participants with a basic understanding of the elements of community geriatric care of the elderly such as the management of common medical problems and the issues in coordinating and continuing care and services in the community.

Module 6 Basic Lay Counseling of Seniors will introduce participants to the basic understanding of the principles of peer or lay counseling, common techniques, such as cognitive therapy (automative negative thoughts), behaviour therapy (relaxation), and ‘story telling’, that can be adapted for use by lay persons.
